Planning your first time ice skating

What should I wear to go ice skating?

Whether skating indoors or outdoors it is important to wear an outfit which enables you to move freely and feel comfortably, as well as choosing fabrics that aren’t overly absorbent. Stiff fabrics such as denim are best avoided as they can restrict movement and will quickly absorb moisture when in contact with the ice.

Should I buy a skating outfit?

While you can buy some really stylish clothes designed specifically for skating practice, a lot of casual sports clothes will do the job just fine when you are just starting out. So before you decide to invest any money in a purpose made skating outfit why not try a session in some gym clothes you may already have?

Layer up!

Although the ambient temperature at the rink will be cool, you will start to warm up in no time so wearing several thinner layers enables you to remove garments as your intensity increases and throw them back on when required.

Wear gloves

Let’s be honest- when you are starting out skating it’s quite likely that you will be spending a little bit of time touching the ice! For that reason it’s always a good idea to wear a pair of gloves to keep your hands warm and take the sting out of touching down on the ice.

Avoid thick socks

Even for the novice ice skater, it is important that your feet are able to feel the inside of your boot. Wearing thick or multiple pairs of socks reduces your sensation and control, they may also increase the risk of blisters. Something like a football or a running sock is ideal for the beginner skater.

Should I wear protective gear?

Protective skating gear is usually considered optional, helmets and wrist guards are recommended for preventing more serious injury while elbow pads, hip pads and knee pads are designed to give additional padding and prevent bruising.

Skate with an experienced skater

Most skating rinks provide taster sessions and beginner courses which are a great way to learn some of the basics from professional coaches. Alternatively, if you can arrange to tag along with an experienced skater they should be able to help you to get your balance on the ice, as well as providing you with pointers on your technique.

When you start out don’t be afraid of falling, it is all part of the learning process and everybody around you has fallen before and will more than likely fall again. Using the boards around the edge of the rink will help you to keep your balance and become steady on your feet.
